Iphone wont be recognized by itunes

Last night I updated my itunes account to 12.5.1. Prior to that, I hooked up my iphone 6 and ran a sync to transfer some music. After I updated, I plugged in my device to transfer more music, but this time my itunes account wont recognize my iphone --the iphone symbol wont show up in the left hand corner and itunes says I have no devices plugged in--. But when I plug my iphone in my laptop, it gives me a notification that my iphone was just plugged in. It should also be noted that I did update my iphone 6 to version 10. How do I make my device seen by itunes? (Also it should be noted that I'm using a Dell XPS 13--please don't look down on this brand, I just bought this laptop last month, its state of the art and actually better than the Apple Mac Book Pro--)
